That's a Gherkin party to all you mamut outside Finland. Well not so much a party as a working bee to produce a heap of dill pickles while all the right ingredients are at their peak. We had one last year and the time has come again so once again we had 25 kilograms or cucumbers to wash, slice, pack and pickle with all the appropriate spices and flavourings. Every family has their favoured flavour and the Jaurimaa's (and it seems therefore the Thomas's) is laid in stone. Everyone has a job which is assigned based on seniority...Daddy has still only progressed as far as washing the gherkins, but I suspect that might be because he's also responsible for getting everyone fed. The kids had a great time playing with the other kids including K colouring Kusti in with crayons! Then a big pot of roast tomato soup for the posse with heaps of freshly baked bread, cake and watermelon to follow.
Blackcurrant leaves, fresh from Hanna's farm
Dill seed heads.
Lots and lots of garlic.
Gherkins, cleaned and ready to be sliced.
Nana helping Emi to make her first bottle.
Little hands make light work.
Pickling through the generations.
K's tutorial from Dad.
Pouring on the pickling liquid and spices.
The team..
...working hard.
Hanna's crazy for gherkins.
This is only half of the resulting motley collection of jars produced.
